Why does that bother people?

The original version had Han as a bit of a dodgy guy, someone you could believe might actually turn on Luke etc, who might actually walk away at a critical time, and who really would shoot first in a fight. Also, it was sensible, and what a cop would probably do.

Having him shoot second, only after the other guy shoots, makes him a bit more stupid, and panders to the overly PC re-writing of our childhood!

Plus it makes Greedo look utterly useless. How do you miss at that range?

Also, Han was supposed to be quite the quick draw, ie: Fastest gun in the galaxy.

If you read his memoirs it talks about the time he was his absolute fastest.

And suddenly, Greedo is this poor, short-sighted clerk who's just trying to make a living and sees a chance to make a buck. He's scraping the bread line, raising three kids and maybe supporting his wife's obsessive-compulsive clothes shopping habit, like the guy Tony wasname in that Murakami short story. Sure it's not that bright of him to go up against a dangerous smuggler, but times are tough on Tatooine and it's this or have Jabba foreclose on his own debts and then he'll sell the kids into slavery.

So really, Han's the bastard for killing him when clearly it would be perfectly safe to just throw something at him and sock him on the jaw.

When we first meet him, Han is not a nice guy. He's a smuggler, a mercenary, only thinking of himself. Having him shoot second dilutes this. He might eventually be persuaded to join the Rebel cause but there are lot of factors that cause that switch.
And, as Dave says, how can Greedo possibly miss at that range?

Yes, a big theme in the whole story is redemption - removing Han from the grey area he originally began in simply short circuits that. Does nothing but a disservice to the character and the story. Bizarre mixed message - people CAN be saved, but not if they shoot first in a fight? wtf?

And it's stupid. They changed a little thing like that but there's still the whole thing later where he turns his back on the rebels out of self interest, only to have second thoughts and go back to save Luke at the crucial moment. The difference is - before they messed about with the shooting scene, you could believe he was really walking out on his friends to save his own skin and the impact of his return was all it should be.

Maybe he should have gone to specsavers?

Have you seen his eyes? Try to find that Specsavers operative who can fit a pair on those things. ;oP

And we're annoyed at Lucas for lying and saying he meant to have it happen that way the whole time, when the book *he wrote* also clearly has Han shooting first.

What's the point of being a rogue, scoundrel, and cad if you don't get to shoot the bad guys first?

Han did not shoot first.
han was slipping- a washed up drunk regardless of his account of things.
On the run from the Hutt AND Imperial authorities...
As has been.

Greebo simply got the drop on him.
And missed. Cos he was crap. ALL the people in Jabb's court was crap. Why else you think a couple of ex mercenaries, a single wookie, two droids, a blind smuggler a cry baby wannabie Jedi and a pint in a skimpy dress were able to take 'em out without so much as ONE loss on their side?

Han was a crap smuggler and a crap criminal.
He only joined the Alliance cos he had the hots of Leia- and he only went for her cos she was rich.
typical gold digger...

So yeah- crap Han did NOT shoot first.
He was Crap Han.

No wonder he took the Old Mans money- he was desperate!
