Good going, Team GB, rising from 7th to 3rd place in the medal table. Congrats!

Maybe, just maybe, we'll beat Australia......though I think we have to thank Phelps for severely restricting the Aussies usual aquatic gold rush.

But maybe you should read my last post.....it's not as all-dominant as it seems!

It isn't so much about medal tables, thats not really the point. Its more that we've got competitors doing well in a lot of different sports, winning multiple events (and utterly dominating in track cycling), thats whats so encouraging.

*nods* It's that variety that have allowed GB to come through, though. Germany have run out of options.

Germany need an Atlanta Moment. Thats when GB recorded only one gold medal at the Olympics, and UK Sport and the Great Britain Olympic federation went and had a long hard look at how we organise domestic sports. That restructuring had an almost instant impact, with us gaining 11 golds in Australia and 9 in Athens. Giving real targets for winning medals at world and Olympic games, linking lottery funding to those achivements, and centralising the national squads (e.g. the cycling team all train together at the Manchester Velodrome). Its paid off in the same way that the Aussies big reorganisation after a disastrous '76 games paid off.

Its clear that what we've got to do now is more of the same; apply the same thinking to those sports where we haven't delivered. Swimming is catching up, I think that athletics and gymnastics should be next.
