Torchwood didn't really inspire today but it reminded me of a conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] sogoth and friends on Sunday after dinner. We thought it would be fantastic if there were pain-resistant cows with incredible regenerative powers so you could out the piece you wanted and it would grow back within a day or two (ETA: much like shearing a sheep, with no harm to the animal, otherwise this would be horrible). All you ever needed was one cow and you could have meat until it died of natural causes.

This sounds like the infamous Kebab animal. Kept out the back of kebab shops they have legs cut off and replace with a metal pin and the meat grows back around it which they cut off to cook and replace with a metal pin.

Have you never heard of them ? :)

Yes, I have. :o)
Kebab isn't recognisable meat, though, I'm talking about proper cuts.

See this? This makes me want to go vegetarian

* feels sick that anyone would even consider that *

Hm, maybe I should have clarified. This was all under the provision that it would mean no harm to the animal, no less than shearing a sheep.

Me too. I think even if the cow didn't feel pain, it would be distressed that people kept coming along and cutting its legs off.

That is such a random idea! Good in some ways I suppose (as long as it did not hurt) but a possibly bit san-loss for the cow :S

Why not have vat-grown meat? No need for an animal at all.

Yes, it would need to be a very special cow.
Maybe the idea of being able to grow steaks, fillets etc. in a petri dish would be better...

Heh, see the comment above I just wrote.

Well, I guess it would be preferable to the existing method of getting meat. I find it weird that people commenting, who eat meat obtained in the usual way, are squicked by this. I mean, wouldn't a normal cow be "distressed" by being actually raised and killed for meat, at least as much as a hypothetical cow might be distressed by the loss of a limb?

I agree vat grown meat would be even better though.

It's the idea of eating somthing that's still alive and it sounded like they sedated it but they didn't give pain relief as such.
I thought it was a good episode, not as scary as some but it will be interesting to see if Gwen's bloke can keep it all to himself now. The sexual tension between them all is very reminiscent of Angel.

*nods*
Vat grown meat would probably take a lot of developing time until it approaches the real thing so it might be as far off as the idea of a regenerating living meat supplier.

Reminds me of the scene in HHGTTG where the cow(pig?) was recommending bits of itself for dinner...
