is it just me or does the title music sound a lot like the one from Carnivàle? The titles themselves are done in the same way, too.

Don't know coz I've never seen Rome but am in the process of falling madly in love with Carnivale! I've got it on rental from Amazon and am about halfway through season one, and its fabulous and beautiful, and weird in the best way, and full of fabulous characters, and I could gush for quite a while about it!
Puzzled last night though, when there was a reference made to Hawkins being an escaped convict... errr did I fall asleep during a previous episode here? How what where when etc?!

Oh, and the titles are some of the best I've seen in years!

It was by far the best new and original series in a long time with extremely high production values. Every shot was like a conceived photograph and as you say, the characters were equally brilliant. It would have so deserved the six seasons it should have been but declining viewer numbers (because the average dumb US TV consumer couldn't follow the depth of the plot anymore) let to its demise. At least it went to the end of the second Season, concluding the first section of the planned story arch. It's a reasonably satisfying end which still leaves a number of unanswered questions (about the greater picture) but most of the most pressing mysteries during the first two seasons are revealed (while others are being introduced).

In the first episode, while he's burying his mother, you can see a chain around one of his ankles. It's not actually revealed in the series (it might have been later) but according to the writer, "Ben was imprisoned for assaulting a bank officer. He subsequently killed a guard while escaping".

Aha! Never spotted that.
Another thing I love is that its full of beautiful people who aren't hollywood beautiful... they all feel more like real people than most tv characters.
Also, at the stage I'm up to (episode 8 I think...) It is going against the usual TV/Film thing of me finding the main charaters the least interesting. finally, something where I care about the main characters as much as the minor ones!

I don't think there's any character who isn't interesting (or has something to hide) in some way and you feel for (or hate) every one of them.
The Brother Justin story arch takes a while to get going but its development is enormous.
The last episode of Season 2 was the most stunning piece of TV I'd ever seen and just left me staring at the screen for at least five minutes. I would love to see it at a cinema.

Oh wow I'm going to have to keep watching then because I've been staring in awe at it a few times already!
Tempted to cancel them from the rental and just buy them!

I bet they're quite cheap now.
