RW is a really stupid brand name for blank DVDs?

The stupidest. I know so many people who have bought DVD-R instead of DVD-RW discs by mistake because of it.

erm, what's the difference?

DVD-R are one shot and can't be re-written. Also they don't work with a lot of video editing software who lay down a menu track before burning the entire DVD.

DVD-Rs are write once, but you can overwrite RWs, they basically act like a floppy disc after they've been formatted with the difference of a higher capacity.
So, if you have DVD-Rs and RWs and you're looking for a RW, it's to pick up a disc with a RW on it and think they are actually rewritable. Then, when you get home your realise they are only write-once because someone had the stupid idea of using "RW" as brand name...

...it's *easy* to pick up...

In that case shouldn't they be called W and RW? Surely it stands for Write and Re-W?rite?

The R actually stands for Recordable though.

I have no idea but shouldn't you realise the catch because of the price? In Germany RW CDs are much more expensive than write-once CDs. But I don't know about DVDs and don't know about the UK.....

but shouldn't they THEN be called "R" and "RR"? ;-)

LOL. I agree. I think the whole issue is confusing and then they add the extra complication on DVDs of + and -.

It's not necessarily a stupid name, indeed some may argue it's bloody clever. It all rather depends on your point of view and whether you've got shares in the company I expect :)

well, if you can't convince them, confuse them !!

what the hell IS that + and - anyway?

maybe it is all a biiiig conspiracy and the brand name RW was invented to force all the other companies to actually write R and RR on their DVDs. heh.

that indicates that people fall for it more than once. but yeah, people tend to be stupid :)

...or lots of people falling for it once. Before the company decides to rebrand and sell CDs with the brand name DVD... ;)

Then go for it :-)
But please warn me before you sell those DVD-CDs. i'm one of the stupid girls that definitely WOULD fall for it!!!

Yes, you should when buying it.
You still have the problem at home. I just put in a RW branded disc into my drive and wondered why Nero refused to format it...

Basically, it's like coming up with a new car brand and call it Diesel or Turbo.

From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
that's just nasty, though.

To take an unrealistic example: Imagine there was a new car manufacturer who decided to call his brand Diesel but only produced petrol cars.

Imagine there were a company calling its products Diesel but only producing textiles...

technically a CD R is a WORM disc anyway, so its all a bit crazy ;)

Date: 11/11/06 04:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
That example doesn't work because you don't associate the name with any part of the item.

yes, please some more confusion for me. what is a worm disc?? :-D

oh and the plus and minus is apparently to do with how much of the file structure is already on the disc when you get it. The + model discs are more likely to be accepted by devices with copy protection (x-box, ps2 etc)

Or a moderately clever but highly unethical one.

Moderately clever becasue although it'll generate them some extra sales, the brand bad will is going to bite them in the arse.

Actually it about timing information and other side channel tracking infomation used by the drive itself. Most notablt iirc the track 'wobble' on plus(+) is modulated but it a constant frequency on dash (-) format.

Not about the data structures which support the files, that is up the user although will almost always be UDF or ISO9660

From the users perspective the only difference seems to be relating to the formatting process which can be different, and individual parts of the DVD+Rw disc can be rewritten without erasing the disc which you need to do for DVD-RW.

Oh , and apparently the Blue ray discs and changed the notation for their discs to DB-R and BD-RE.

You already lost me in your first paragraph :-S
I think i'll just have to keep buying ANY CDs/DVDs and hope they'll work.
