1. On Wednesday, the Hamster crashes a crazy car in reasonably controlled conditions while undoubtedly being aware of the possible risks involved. However, it was his own decision to take that risk and he didn't endanger anyone else and definitely not the public. He was seriously injured but is on his slow way of recovery. Despite this, there are calls for the BBC to scrap Top Gear because it "promotes obsession with speed and acceleration".

2. Today, the Transrapid crashed on its German test track (mainly used as a tourist attraction) into a maintenance vehicle and 15 people die (so far, there's little hope for the rest of the 21 passengers now). None of the passengers on that train had any control over their journey and as far as they (or any routine journey) was concerned, there were no risks in taking that journey. There will be an investigation and those responsible will be held responsible but I doubt very much that this will be the end of the Transrapid (which is quite fast, too), neither the existing commercial track in China nor any of those planned around the world.

Both were accidents, presumably caused by human failure.

Yes, but they don't have the Daily Mail in Germany...

That is true.
While there is a considerable conservative base in Germany, they seem to be more reasonable than their British counterpart...

Accidents will happen, even in the most controlled of conditions. The manifest difference being the fact that the Transrapid hardly encourages foolhardy behaviour, or glamourises driving at stupid speeds.

For your comparison to be valid, you would have to compare a suggestion to ban cars, due to the crash, to a suggestion of banning the Transrapid.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] veritasema's latest post and be grateful you chose THIS English-speaking nation and not the one across the pond.

Hm, true but not cars but crazy dragster cars, probably.
The reaction to the Hamster crash is still blown out of proportion.

I've been to the US four times now and have always come back with the sentiment that it's a great place to visit but not actually live. The fact that (one of) the most powerful nation has one of the weakest social security and healthcare networks (i.e. the most basic needs of any society) puts you off indeed.

And that they have Christian Training Camps to turn children into "soldiers for Jesus"?

I have much the same sentiment there as for the crocodile hunter- if you go courting danger at every possible turn, don't be surprised if something goes wrong.

To be honest, I have never understood the attraction of Top Gear, and always felt that it was a rather irresponsible show.

I don't think Hamster IS surprised, but I still think it's out of all proportion to talk about axing the show or banning dragsters because of this.

I suppose the argument is that some of those accidents may have been caused by drivers who've become more irresponsible after watching too much Top Gear...

This should interest you - explains one concept as to why so many feel that it is inappropriate to have safety nets.

More like "Marilyn Manson is responsible for people being Goths", I think.

Very few real goths like MM, just spooky kids.
IIRC, MM was specifically mentioned during the Columbine investigation.
