A little patience, a little skill, and a fair dose of luck for the crowd, subject and lights to all be right at the same time. The camera was was far from the most important part in this equation. ;)

Well said! My best comment ever recieved was one of
"Wow, those are amazing photos, you must be able to hold the camera really steady!"

That said, I get very frustrated very quickly with compacts, especially the higher end prosumer ones, but I think that comes down to the shutter delay, no hole to peer through, and, crucially, the fact I can't use the buggers.
