Did exactly what I thought it would and more. There was actually plot, there was character development, there were snakes and there was The Man himself, Samuel L Jackson.
If you're feeling down and need a lift, switch off and watch this film, it'll do you good, provided you're not afraid of snakes, of course.

Our group ([livejournal.com profile] robinbloke, [livejournal.com profile] razornet, [livejournal.com profile] nekofairy666, [livejournal.com profile] raggedy_man, [livejournal.com profile] _ebb_, [livejournal.com profile] devalmont, [livejournal.com profile] belak_krin, Kirstie, Swearing Dave, [livejournal.com profile] rirekon and [livejournal.com profile] briggsy)  accounted for about a fourth of the audience but everyone had brought at least one snake and the rest of the audience seemed quite enthusiastic, too. I don't think the title of a film ever got an applause before. ;o)

There are enough one--liners and quirky characters in it to make it a cult film, I think.
Then again, I thought the same of Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow but there's very little you hear about it anymore and Conran's proposed next project (Carter of Mars) seems to have disappeared from the radar, too.
Update: John Carter of Mars is being made, but by Jon Faveau. Thanks for the info, [livejournal.com profile] professoryaffle.

They wanted to make a film of Carter of Mars? Fantastic, I used to love the books!

Yes, and considering how Conran handled the genre with Sky Captain, I think it would have been really good.
I can only assume that he was unable to get funding as Sky Captain flopped. I thought it was brilliant and so did everyone else who likes the genre but I guess that's not enough people...

Hmm- I wonder whom he would have cast as Deja Thoris...

Hmm, I like the genre well enough in writing, but his realization of it was pretty damp and feeble I thought, with lazy actors and dull direction.

The name you may be missing is Kirstie if its the curly haired blonde lass who you're looking for the name of.

I found it quite an interesting film on the basis that you could clearly see that the script (possibly even to shooting level) was the kind of awful b-movie schlock that ends up being sold in Petrol stations - behold 'snake-o-vision', completely stereo-typical characters and ubiquitous sex-death. Then points where money can help a film - evidenced by the quality of lighting and camera work which tends to be lacking in cheaper films, and the special effects/snake attack scenes (where the script would have simply said 'snakes attack and kill x, bite y in the eye' etc.)

Which was a strange mix of effectively tense creature feature and appallingly written (and yet some how ingenious) characters.

I don't recall any character development myself unless you decide to include
Flight Attendent: You're such a Jerk, Samuel
Samuel L Jackson: But I work for the FBI, don't you like my shiney head? Do you hate black people?
Flight Attendent: Oh no, I didn't meant that.
Samuel L Jackson: Don't worry your pretty little head about it. Check out my winking.
Flight Attendent: I love you guy I hated two seconds ago...

All very amusing

I like the genre, but found the film dull & tedious.

It just didn't seem to have the verve it needed.

Shame, because there were the seeds of some good stuff in it.

...while props are fine, dumb fans are taking things to extremes; in one US theater, two teenage patrons released 2 Diamondback Rattlesnakes in the theater, after the house lights were turned down.

Right, Kirstie, thanks.

I never said it was a quality film, just very entertaining. It lived off its stereotypes, which were played extremely well. ;o)

All in context, of course.
