The mysterious illness thing cracked me up, but speaking as a shop worker:

THAT makes me want to move to Germany right now and not even pack a bag.

It's one of the reaons why they'd never get full Saturday/Sunday opening times because the trade unions won't budge on working hours.

For consumers, it's less convenient, but it's all a matter of organising things.
During my first year doing my translator's degree, I had a long Monday (lectures til 6) which meant I wouldn't get home until 7 or so when all the shops/supermarekts were already closed. As things usually ran out over the weekend, that was sometimes a problem if I didn't have the chance to pick up some supplies during lunch.

Then again, you get some strange opening times over here, too. While shops are open all day Saturday and Sunday, they close at 5pm at the latest during the week (and don't get me started on banks). In Germany, they would at least be open until 6, now quite often until 8 (at least in cities).

See, I am of the opinion that making up to a quarter of a country's workforce suffer unsociable hours at minimum wage for the "convenience" of consumers is cruel and nasty. I think if the extended sunday hours that the government is consulting on at the moment go through I will seriously look into emigrating....

*nods* I completely understand that.
I very much value my regular working hours, although I wouldn't mind being able to swap the odd Saturday for a weekday off so I could go shopping in town when it isn't as hectic as on a Saturday.

Yes - the lakes! We were foolish enough to rent a chalet next to one of them during the Women's Worlds last year. As teh temperature hit 38 degrees, the heaving mounds of naked flesh and charred Wurst descended among the mossies and flung themselves into the slimy shallows. (Actually, if you swam out to the island at the centre the water got much clearer and it was quite pleasant!). Oh yes, the Neptune Festival : /

Stuck in the 80s? Mohawks and mullets? Well, just where do they think that most of the cutting edge music in Europe hails from?

I wish there was more of the "Brutally Honest" attitude in the UK, I prefer people to say what they mean and mean what they say.

Now there's a title for a blog if anybody is going to spend their holidays in Germany ;-)
Alternatively, a death metal album.

I sometimes get flak for it but I don't care because I share that sentiment.

Heavy Sigh! I have the sentiment, and fear I may have caused a bit of flak myself (especially recently) by being brutally honest. Groan!
If someone asks me a direct question - I can't help but answer bluntly.
