[News] Buh?

Burger King recalls 'sacrilegious' desserts

This is getting out of hand. What's next? Catholics demanding the shape of donuts be changed because they look like halos?

[identity profile] arken-thell.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's like the vampires in Prachetts Maskerade. Every swirl and pattern they see a religious symbol.

Bloody idiotic

[identity profile] undyingking.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Your comparison suggests that "Muslims" were complaining about these icecreams, but AFAICS it was just one lone nutter. "A Catholic person complains about donuts looking like halos" wouldn't make the news -- this one is only news because BK decided to try and get a bit of positive publicity out of it rather than just ignoring him.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, but you know what I meant.

[identity profile] undyingking.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure -- I just sometimes get annoyed by the way that such news is often put across as "Muslims say / want / do various unreasonable things" when this generally applies only to small numbers of extremists. Westerners' understanding of Islam is generally shaky enough, without being encouraged to think that all Muslims are nutty fundamentalists. Heaven knows there are plenty of Christians with loopy views as well.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, most people who read this LJ know that I don't generalise, otherwise I would have tagged this post with "muslims" rather than "religious nutters", just as I've written about fundamentalist Christians as well.
I don't feel I have to put disclaimers on anything I write.

[identity profile] georgechance.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Every religion has its "nutters". And has it's very sane people too.

Anyone that thinks that "all of any religion" are nuts, well it does not matter how he puts it, they will think that way anyhow :)

[identity profile] undyingking.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's for sure ;-)

[identity profile] diasporal-waves.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Even though his complaint made Burger King recall and redesign the packaging at great cost, he is still not happy and calls for all muslims to boycott BK? What did he want then? Surely he got his way and should be happy?

"This is my jihad"! Christ sake, this person should just f**k off and like on his own in a hole and never speak to people again.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

/...and relax.

[identity profile] jholloway.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This, actually, is a completely legitimate use of the word "jihad," although it's a little silly. You can have a jihad against poverty, a jihad against smoking, a jihad against anything, really. For an English equivalent, think "crusade."

"One man's crusade to put a stop to nudity in porn."

"One man's crusade to implement new parking guidelines."

"A mother's crusade to ban sticky notes."

... and so on, and so on.

[identity profile] djmike.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
What a shit mentality some people have that they have to impinge their beliefs over something completely harmless - it's not like Burger King is advertising it as a Muslim-inspired dessert!

Perhaps this post should be withdrawn and returned to its author because it might OFFEND people with its suggestion that people like this should simply back off and get a life.

There's a four-letter word I want to call people like this. It starts with C and ends with a T.

[identity profile] aardnebby.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
2 theories:

1. *sigh* not another religious nutter. The problem is, all this PC crap means society feels the need to treat them better than someone who asks for the Nike "tick" symbol to be withdrawn because the voices told him so.

2. [i]The offending lid was spotted in a branch in Park Royal last week by business development manager Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe.[/i]
I wonder if he is currently "developing" the business of say... McDonalds...

[identity profile] civi.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If the pips of a fruit happen to resemble the name of God, it is a mircale.

If the lid of a tub happens to resemble the name of God,it's sacrilege?

WTF?

[identity profile] davefish.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
A complete reworking of mathematics is required, as the addition symbol is in the shape of a cross, evidently offensive to Christians.

[identity profile] diasporal-waves.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Offending Christians? I see that as a plus...

/try the veal.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That hurt!!

[identity profile] sublevel3.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Our society as a whole should stop pandering to these nutters. We're just encouraging them if everytime they make threats they get something done.

[identity profile] thepussykat.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
what a twunt - but it couldn't happen to a nicer company (apart from possibly Mcshallnotbementioneds)

[identity profile] mattp.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Pictures for comparison appear in the Sun's article:

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If I were Disney, I'd sue BK because that logo looks like Mickey's hand!

[identity profile] jholloway.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the Sun. "Banned," despite the fact that no one has banned anything. That's about right.

[identity profile] nephilimbabe.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He he - I saw this a while ago!

Isn't the Islam quite a "new" religion compared to Christianity?
In fact I'd also like to say that Burger King has also been around for what it seems to be like forever - perhaps BK should take the prophet Mohammed to court for plagiarism!

[identity profile] jholloway.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Establishing jurisdiction might be a problem. Do we have an extradition treaty with the afterlife?

[identity profile] nephilimbabe.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm. True.

Firstly they'd have to prove he existed in the first place - tricky!

[identity profile] eryx-uk.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And people wonder why there is such hatred and disrespect towards members of the Muslim community. They are taking the piss with this bullshit attitude that we have to change our society to be more considerate of theirs. Bollocks. If they don't like it, go live in another country.

[identity profile] colonel-maxim.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
For once in my life, I am going to cut the crap and say it as I see it.. 'What a fucking load of undiluted fucking crap.'

Apologies but...

[identity profile] ua-meruti.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Loony "devout" Muslim: I'm a good Muslim and thus I'm totally bummed at BK for accidentally making something that looks like the Prophet's name. I therefore declare a jihad on them even though they've done what I want.
Real Devout Muslim: Umm.. if you're such a mondo Muslim, why are you in Burgerking? You do know those burgers aren't Halal don't ya?

This was almost exactly what a Muslim friend of mine said when I mentioned this to him.
