English question (asking for a friend)

What do you call the different departments (politics, economy, sports etc.) of a newspaper organisation (not the physical newspaper)?
In German it's the rather obscure "Ressort".

Um... AFAIK they are often called "desks", e.g. "sports desk", "politics desk". But that may be out of date usage, I'm not a journalist.
