Oxford

I assume jumping off a bridge in Oxford is about as dangerous as in Cambridge?

[identity profile] bateleur.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No, much more dangerous because the Cherwell's only about 2ft deep under that bridge!

Ouch! Then again, if you account for shopping trolleys, bicycles and other debris in the Cam, it's probably about the same...

[identity profile] bateleur.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And giant cabbages! There are some weird things under the surface of the Cam...

Considering it used to be the most radioactive river in England (at least I remember reading that some time ago), I'm not surprised. ;o)

Oxford has plenty of those too. That bridge is also about 20 metres from where my friends saw a dead sheep flaoting past.

But this May Morning thing meant I have Jeager bombs fro breakfast. How hardcore am I? :D

That's not hardcore, that's silly. :oP

There are signs on bridges in the River Dee telling people not to jump off. Unfortunately, when I lived in Chester, I always noticed people jumping every summer. The main danger there was the undercurrent.

I went on a Ghost tour in October 2005, and one of the stories was that people haunted he bridge because of drowning.

The main danger in Oxford and Cambridge is breaking your legs or spine because the rivers are so shallow...

Wow. How fucking stupid can people get?

No, wait. Don'r answer that.

BTW, on an off topic thread- have you decided on a date for the butterly jungle?

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Very.

Er, no, what were the options?

[identity profile] ginasketch.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's open from 1 May - 27 September 2009 and I can get you free tickets. (Please note that it is closed on Sundays).

If it's open til September, it's probably worth waiting until the first rush is over. Early June?

I suspect the Thames is a lot deeper.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently, this particular bridge is over the Cherwell which isn't very deep at all (see [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's comment above).

[identity profile] feanelwa.livejournal.com 2009-05-02 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
They're not jumping in the Thames, and it's probably got cleaner since I was a kid but I still wouldn't jump in the Thames anyway!

[identity profile] mansunite.livejournal.com 2009-05-02 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Far more dangerous!
From that bridge, the fall is far greater than most Cam bridges, and the Cherwell isn't as artificially channelled as the Cam so is wider and shallower!
