It's Trek, Jim, but not as we know it

and it is indeed very good. What really made the film for me were the little touches and references and I think it's a really good vehicle for revitalising the franchise, just like what the new BSG did.
My only real problem was the design of the Enterprise, too clean, too white, too bright, too shiny but I liked the tech elements of it, the mix of touchscreen and hands on button pushing/switch flicking.

I felt that the rift wasn't really explored properly - and was irritated that they seemed to be talking - they should still have been in the pre-Babel estrangement?

I was more talking about the actors though. I knew that mark Lenard was going to be the one that I would miss the most, so was prepared for that, but Winona Rider was so wrong imo. Amanda was beautiful, graceful, full of a sense of serenity (except when she got pissed) that was very missing, I felt.

McCoy was fantastic!

No, it wasn't explored properly, but I thought "Ah, that's how it started" (so possibly not enough for newbies).
Yeah, Sarek felt more like a cardboard cutout Vulcan, he was missing Lenard's pained dignity. True, Amanda should have been better.

I think McCoy was the biggest surprise for me (after Kirk), he worked really well.
