I lived in the area of Germany where he did a lot of work for six years. :o)
I was a bit surprised by the opulence of the Krakow one because his other work is a lot more subdued. His altar piece in Bamberg cathedral is just plain wood (http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4144/4981545073_df74b75145_b.jpg) but that fits the plain stone architecture of the building.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of stone in the Krakow area because both the cathedral in town and large parts of the castle were built of red brick. Considering many walls were between one and two metres thick, that's a lot of brick!
