I caught up on last night's TV earlier, including Natural World. This episode was called Iron Curtain, Ribbon of Life. I had two reasons to watch this, one because it's Natural World and always good and the second because I grew up 3km from the Iron Curtain (the border to what was then Czechoslovakia) on the Western German side. While the no man's land between East and West was commonly called the Todesstreifen (death strip), it became the exact opposite for wildlife which could hide and thrive there. The programme shows the findings of a number of wildlife researchers all the way along the former line of the Iron Curtain (on both sides). What fascinated me most was the behaviour of some of the animals after the death strip was removed. It seems that the "border in our heads" isn't just reserved for humans...
I actually half expected a family friend who used to be the chief forester and has done a lot of conservation work (and is our source of venison) to turn up but he didn't. That would have been really cool.
